Release Title:
NASA helps cops catch criminals on Earth with video technology invented by space scientists

FBI and other law enforcement officers - whose investigations are normally down-to-Earth - recently have been seeking the help of two NASA scientists who study the Sun and storms like hurricanes. Dr. David Hathaway and Paul Meyer used their expertise and equipment for analyzing satellite video to create technology that can dramatically improve TV images including crime scene videos. Hear Hathaway and Meyer talk about how they invented the computer software and worked with detectives to solve crimes.

Soundbites Description

Soundbite #1
(516K)

Meyer talks about how VISAR is able to enhance video images.

Transcript: "VISAR is our process to stabilize video. It stands for Video Image Stabilization and Registration."

Soundbite #2
(520K)

Meyer talks about how VISAR was invented in response to the FBI's need to clarify video of the bombing at the 1996 Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta.

Transcript: "VISAR came about by working with the FBI. We were called in to assist them in the Atlanta Olympic bombings from 1996."

Soundbite #3
(292K)

Meyer talks about how VISAR can be used on home computers to stabilize video made by camcorders.

Transcript: "Perhaps you've shot videos of your children's sporting events that are all shaky and bouncy. Our VISAR product can actually take and stabilize that video."

Soundbite #4
(86K)

Hathaway talks about how VISAR works to reveal features you can't see in ordinary video.

Transcript: "It's a process where we take video and stabilize it so all parts of the image stay fixed. It takes out the location, zoom, and jitters in either the horizontal or vertical. It allows us to add images together to bring out features that you wouldn't see otherwise."

Soundbite #5
(82K)

Hathaway talks about working with the FBI on criminal cases.

Transcript: "The FBI came to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center because of our expertise in image processing. We had done work on enhancing images from Hubble Space Telescope. I do work myself on images of the Sun, trying to find details that are difficult to see in regular images."
